Arena Development was hired by these clients to build a modern transitional Mediterranean styled home from their historical 1837 farmhouse while keeping a portion of the existing foundation in place.

The first challenge was securing a variance for a non-conforming addition to the existing
foundation. We also needed to receive approvals from the Stamford Historical Society to demolish a home over 175 years old. Once we demolished the house down we encountered a foundation of stone and mortar that needed to be re-stabilized. Because the client wanted a finished lower level with 8’ ceilings, we had to raise the foundation height by 18’’. Being that the old foundation was constructed of old slab stone, which in some areas was two feet wide, this required considerable team work and skill between our in-house mason, Domenick Schinella, the engineer and the architect.

The end result is a stunning work of craft and imagination. We were able to keep the existing double fireplace in the center of the home. The walkout lower level opens up to a granite patio with columns supporting the overhanging 1st floor. The open center hall staircase overlooks the family room and the custom marble surround masonry fireplace. The old world stucco finish in accordance with the stream lined exterior trim work and the front entry way create a timeless look. The clients were extremely pleased with the final product all while staying in budget.
